Student & Volunteer Testimonials

"My time in Zanzibar was a great and thrilling experience. I was able to work with an amazing local healthcare teams who always achieve good patient outcome. I became more flexible and improved my communication skills. I also learnt new, culturally sensitive ways to help patients and became more interested about global mental health nursing."

"There were definitely moments of learning and adapting, especially with the cultural differences, but the women we both had the privilege of caring for were so strong, kind and inspiring. They made this experience one that we will never forget. This placement has taught us so much, both professionally and personally, and it's something that will stay with us throughout our career. A huge thank you to all the staff at K4C who supported us throughout our journey. Your dedication and passion were truly inspiring, and we learned so much from you."

"Overall, this experience significantly strengthened my ability to adapt to change across multiple dimensions personally, culturally, and professionally. Moving forward, I aim to continue building on this adaptability by embracing unfamiliar situations with a more proactive and composed mindset, recognising that these experiences are essential for my growth as a healthcare professional and as a person."

"I would like to highlight the support from the Knowledge for Change team, who were consistently welcoming and helpful. In particular, Rahma had a truly significant impact on my experience. From the beginning, she made me feel genuinely welcomed, safe, and included within the maternity team. She consistently demonstrated kindness, patience, and professionalism, always taking the time to answer my questions and explain clinical practices in a way that supported my learning."

Alma Adult Nursing
King's College London • Zanzibar (2026)

"Thank you to everyone at Jitimai Hospital and Knowledge for Change for welcoming us, answering our endless questions, making us laugh and making us feel part of the team. Thank you to every member of staff who took the time to teach us and every patient who allowed us to learn from their care. I don't think any of us will ever forget this month, and I'm sure we'll be talking about Zanzibar for years to come. Asante sana for everything."

"I chose to volunteer with Knowledge for Change (K4C) because I felt strongly aligned with their values and deep-rooted commitment to the local community, and this experience only reinforced how valuable that ethos is. This trip was by far the most rewarding experience I've ever had. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, deepened my appreciation for global health systems, and solidified my passion for physiotherapy and community-centred care. It's something I continue to reflect on daily, and I know the lessons I learned — both clinical and personal — will stay with us throughout our future career."

"My four-week international placement in Fort Portal, Uganda, was an incredibly valuable and rewarding experience... The expertise, dedication and kindness of the local healthcare professionals and K4C team made the experience particularly special. I learnt so much from working alongside them and seeing how they deliver high-quality, patient-centred care despite different resources and challenges....Our weekends gave us the opportunity to make the most of our time in Uganda, including going on a safari, hiking around the beautiful crater lakes and visiting a local spa lodge... while developing a deeper appreciation for Ugandan culture and the local community. I would highly recommend a K4C placement to other student nurses. It is an experience that develops your clinical skills, confidence and cultural awareness, while giving you memories and learning that you can carry throughout your nursing career."

Katie Davies

"I really enjoyed my time in Fort Portal working alongside the K4C staff. I spent 2 weeks working in the surgical wards where I saw many wounds and injuries that were unlike anything I had experienced previously, lots of trauma wounds particularly...It was amazing to see how the staff made the most of the resources they had, often reusing or repurposing one thing to become something else. The resourcefulness really put into perspective how wasteful we are in the UK in regards to nursing supplies. It was great to get to work in the Kagote centre as well as the K4C house and see how outreach clinics such as the cervical screening, orthotics/prosthetics and diabetes NEEDS program were conducted. I feel privileged to have been chosen to represent my university on this placement and have gained so much knowledge that will be valuable to me in my future practice as an adult nurse."

"My four-week placement in Uganda is an experience I will never forget and truly will be forever grateful for forever. During my placement I was located on the paediatric ward allowing me to build trusting relationships with the local staff, my patients, and their families. I gained a huge amount of knowledge on how low resource settings care for patients, gained friendships that will last a lifetime and learnt so many lessons that I will forever carry with me."

Daisy

"Overall, I would describe my experience in Uganda as completely life-changing and a memory that I will cherish forever. The placement allowed me to develop not only as a student nurse but also as a person. I returned home with greater confidence, increased resilience and a broader understanding of different cultures, healthcare systems and ways of life. Most importantly, I gained a different perspective on what is truly important in life. I will always be grateful to the people I met during my time in Uganda and to the lifelong friendships I have made. This experience has given me memories and lessons that I will carry with me throughout my nursing career, and I would wholeheartedly recommend an international placement experience to anyone considering one. Even if you feel nervous or scared, sometimes you just have to take the opportunity and do it! It has truly been an amazing experience that I will never forget."

Academic, Universities & Partner Testimonials

Prof Laurence Kenney

"I am a Professor of Rehabilitation Technologies at the University of Salford...I've never travelled to Uganda, but working with the K4C team on this project gave me a much better understanding of the challenges inherent in translating good ideas for designs into practical devices which could have impact 'on the ground'. Building on this insight, we were awarded an MRC-funded grant entitled 'Promoting universal health coverage for amputees through social enterprise and engineering innovation' and as part of this carried out a clinical study of a 'fit-for-purpose' upper limb prosthesis. The results were positive and a manufacturer of the device is in discussions with K4C about distributing their product in Uganda. Watching the K4C centre in Fort Portal develop over the last few years and through their team being able to engage users and local clinicians in our work has been a real privilege and I look forward to whatever comes next!"

"The partnership between LJMU and Knowledge for Change offers student paramedics a unique opportunity to engage in global health practice. Through shared learning and cultural exchange, students broaden their clinical thinking and develop a deeper awareness of how healthcare knowledge and resources are distributed around the world. The placement encourages reflection, adaptability, and connection, with learning flowing in both directions. Our students return to the programme and profession in the UK with renewed purpose and a richer understanding of their role within a global health community. It's an experience that stays with them long after they return home, with many describing it as life changing and we are forever grateful for this opportunity."

"We'd like to share our appreciation for the fantastic collaboration we've had with the Knowledge for Change team during the nursing exchange to Zanzibar. We have worked with James and his team for 3 years and from the very beginning, communication was clear, consistent, and supportive, which made planning and delivery smooth and stress-free.

The team has been great to work with—open to ideas, responsive to feedback, and always willing to help. Their support didn't stop at the planning stage; they were there for us as co-ordinators and the nursing students throughout the trip and continued to offer guidance and debrief afterwards.

It's been a genuinely positive experience working together, and we're really looking forward to building on this partnership in future exchanges."

"OsloMet has for several years collaborated with Knowledge for Change in the practicum placement of our bachelor's social work students. K4C has proven to be a flexible partner and has accommodated changing circumstances, providing new placements according to our evolving needs. We are very grateful for the opportunity to have our students learn social work skills in Tanzania, and we appreciate that this provides circumstances that are very different from the local Norwegian context. We believe this placement gives them valuable tools and a professional head start."

"The CSC Fellowship at Knowledge for Change exceeded my professional expectations. From the moment I arrived, their kindness and support were evident, guiding me throughout the entire fellowship journey. The program exposed me to cutting-edge technologies in prosthetics and orthotics, providing real-time insight into advanced practices in the UK. The flexible structure of the program helped me to develop both technical and soft skills. Their partnership with the University of Salford gave me unlimited access to peer-reviewed journals and research resources, which greatly supported my academic growth. Attending conferences and networking with experts broadened my perspective and inspired my work back home. Since completing the fellowship, I have remained in contact with the team and continue to explore further collaboration opportunities."
