What Support and Supervision will be available if I need it?

If you can find an organisation that provides better support and supervision to students during their international placements, we would like to know!

Unlike other organisations, K4C is fully registered as a placement provider with NHS England and employs its own Ugandan and Tanzanian/ Zanzibari clinical staff to provide high-quality supervision for students. Local healthcare facility staff work in-country and frequently provide ongoing supervision to international students. Additionally, we place fully-qualified, trained and UK-registered (NHS) health workers in most placement locations, in particular health facilities. While professional volunteers are there to work for humanitarian purposes and capacity-building knowledge exchange, they can provide supervision to students if and when necessary, as they meet the supervision requirements of professional bodies such as the NMC.

Together, all of these staff are registered practitioners in both the UK, Uganda and Tanzania/ Zanzibar, and they are able to sign off exposures, competencies, experiences and placement hours if required by your University. This also enables you to reclaim some placement costs via the NHS Learning Support Fund.

It is a requirement that any students engaging in hands-on patient care or working with vulnerable adults or children must do so under the professional supervision we ensure is in place. This is part of our ethical commitment to protect both you and the people you are working with, and makes up a key element of K4C's 'Co-Presence Principle'. This principle asks, and ensures, that you:

• Avoid working alone, where and when possible and within reason.
• Avoid working outside of your competency.
• Are adequately supervised by a K4C member of staff, local Ugandan or Tanzanian/Zanzibari healthcare worker(s), and/or UK professional volunteer.
• Do not enter into, or find yourself in, a vulnerable or high-risk situation. If this occurs, you should feel empowered to walk away and report the situation to K4C staff, immediately.

We follow this 'Co-Presence Principle' to ensure mitigation of risk, strengthening of safety, and allow for successful knowledge exchange.

Our friendly and experienced placement managers, administrators and in-country staff are available to help and advise where needed. Free Wi-Fi will be available at your accommodation and we can help you get your own 4G sim-card for when you’re out and about, so wherever you are, you can easily stay in touch with friends and family back at home too.
