How much do placements cost?

*For placements of 7+ weeks in duration, the additional cost is £150 per extra week in Kampala, Fort Portal and Moshi, or £200 per extra week in Zanzibar.
Your placement cost includes:
- Airport transfers
- Accommodation (incl. bills and Wi-Fi)
- Placement related transport costs
- Quality placement supervision from our fully trained, qualified and registered UK, Ugandan and Tanzanian healthcare professionals
As a charity, K4C does not make any profit from running student placements. We keep the costs as low as possible and 100% of any surplus is invested in our charitable projects and activities. From the amount you pay to us we sustainably invest:
- A minimum of £200 per student per month of placement (along with any other surplus generated) into the facilities and organisations that host you, for example, by providing essential equipment, infrastructure and training for local staff.
- A minimum of £300 per student per month of placement into our UK, Ugandan and Tanzanian clinical staff who (as well as providing you with excellent supervision) have a hugely positive impact on local health facilities and their staff and patients by providing high-quality training and mentoring.
By completing a placement with us, you are directly supporting some of the most vulnerable and dis-empowered communities in the world!
When you are ready, we will ask you to transfer a deposit of £195 to confirm your placement (this deposit is included in your total placement cost - it is not additional!) The remainder of your placement cost can be paid later, although full payment must be received no later than 1 month before your agreed placement start date.
We warmly welcome students from outside of the UK- all placement costs noted above are in GBP.
Funding and bursary opportunities
We understand that funding an international elective placement can be difficult and stressful. Most universities have their own travel funding available to support students, so we advise that you start by asking your international offices, placement managers and personal tutors. In particular, you should ask about the 'Turing Scheme' which several Universities have successfully applied for. External funding can also be found by asking friends, colleagues, tutors or searching the internet. We are happy to support students with fundraising and crowdfunding initiatives.
Any healthcare students completing placements with us as a formally accredited part of their academic programme can access the NHS Learning Support Fund to reclaim some placement costs - please contact us for more information about this.
