Ethical Student Placement Programme

We welcome students from any study discipline and level of study including nursing, midwifery, medicine, the allied health professions, social work, biochemistry, pharmacy and microbiology. We endeavour to provide a stimulating, meaningful and effective placement experience which suits students’ needs and interests as well as supporting our projects and partner organisations. Placement locations include ward and operating theatres in large urban hospitals and small rural health centres; community outreach programmes focusing on mental health, children's health and women's empowerment; prisons, juvenile centres and refugee settlements; schools for disabled children and children's development centres. Where possible, students can experience multiple placement locations, however this depends on the placement duration and the needs of our partners at the time. Placements can be any duration from a minimum of 2 weeks.

• Our placements are safe: All placement locations, accommodations and travel arrangements are comprehensively risk assessed to ensure your safety, comfort and wellbeing. Our experienced placement managers are always on hand in case you need any support during placement hours, evenings or weekends. Additional support is available from our own clinical staff who will be with you throughout your placement.
• Our placements are properly supervised and accredited: Unlike other student placement organisations, K4C is fully registered as a placement provider with NHS England and employs its own Ugandan/Tanzanian clinical staff to provide high-quality supervision for students. We also have fully-qualified, trained and UK registered (NHS) health workers based in most placement locations to meet the supervision requirements of professional bodies such as the NMC. This means that placement hours can usually be counted towards your academic programme and that you can reclaim some placement costs via the NHS Learning Support Fund.
• You will gain highly beneficial knowledge, skills and experience: Over 90% of our students reported their placements as having a ‘very strong’ positive impact on their skills in areas such as clinical and communication skills, compassion/empathy, resource awareness, cultural awareness and health systems thinking.
• You are able to make a real difference: Students are actively involved in providing hands-on patient care under direct, high quality supervision from our UK and local staff and partners. 94% of students who completed a placement with K4C believed they had a 'positive' or 'very positive' impact on the individuals, facilities or health system within which they were based.
• Our placements are fun and exciting: You will meet many new and interesting people from around the world. You will have plenty of free time in evenings and weekends; more adventurous travellers can go mountain hiking, on safari park adventures and chimp trekking deep into the African bush.
• Our placements save you money:  As a charity, we do not operate for profit which makes our placements far cheaper than those offered by most private companies. More importantly, the money you do pay supports us to develop health and education systems in developing countries rather than high staff salaries and company profits in the UK.
