Biomedical Engineering

K4C’s Biomedical Engineering programme is run by Dr Robert Ssekitoleko who began with us as a professional volunteer in 2013 and subsequently became a lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences at Makerere University, Kampala. Our biomedical engineering volunteers have focused primarily on improving equipment procurement, maintenance and disposal systems within hospital facilities. This has included running formal training sessions and co-working alongside local technicians to share knowledge, skills and experience. They play an important advisory role in our infrastructural development and equipment provision projects, as well as contributing towards our research and engaging with stakeholders to enact policy change at governmental level.

More recently, some of our volunteers have supported the Fit for Purpose Prosthetics Project in partnership with the University of Salford. This project aims to design and build capacity for the local manufacture of fit for purpose, affordable upper limb prosthetic devices for amputees in Uganda and Jordan. You can find out more about this project on its website.
