Professional Volunteering

Professional Volunteering with K4C

K4C owes much of its success to the skills, commitment and dedication of its professional long-term volunteers. Over the last 8 years, more than 60 UK medics, nurses, midwives, biomedical engineers and social scientists have completed placements through us in Uganda (equating to over 13,000 days of volunteering!). Through the Ugandan Maternal & Newborn Hub, we have placed volunteers all over Uganda including Kampala, Mbale, Gulu, Hoima, Fort Portal, Mbarara and Kisiizi. They have played a crucial role in developing new projects, negotiating with local stakeholders, supervising students whilst on placement and engaging in capacity building activities such as training workshops, on-the-job co-working and mentoring with local staff. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, we would very much like to hear from you! Below is some further information that you may find useful:

Volunteer Requirements: We welcome professional volunteers from a variety of backgrounds including medicine, nursing, midwifery, biomedical engineering, social work, social science and others. Placements can be any duration from 2 weeks to 2 years, however funding opportunities are often dependent on the length of stay (see below). To become a volunteer, you must have a keen interest in global health, health systems strengthening and capacity building. As part of our sustainability strategy, you will be required to work alongside local staff at all times to promote the mutual exchange of knowledge and skills (as opposed to gap filling). Volunteers may also be required to supervise undergraduate students completing their elective placements through K4C. Volunteers are given the autonomy necessary to pursue their own personal projects and interests, providing these lie within the scope of the work of K4C and our long-term strategy. We welcome volunteers travelling with partners or children, however

Volunteering Locations: We have a number of volunteering opportunities available across Uganda. The placement locations vary depending on the requests of our local partners and the demands of any externally funded projects. Currently, the majority of volunteer placements are available in Fort Portal (Western Uganda) and Kampala (Central Uganda), however this may change in due course.

Volunteer Funding: We recognise that international volunteering can be expensive, however we try our best to support as many volunteers as possible with the limited project funding available to us at any particular time. Typically, we are able to provide the following financial support to professional volunteers completing placements of 6 months or longer (shorter placements are very welcome but are likely to have to be self-funded):

  •  – Monthly stipend of £400
  •  –  Return Flight (x1)
  •  –  Accommodation
  •  –  Travel / Medical Insurance
  •  –  Airport Transfers in Uganda
  •  –  Work permit & Clinical Registration in Uganda
